Goal Setting: Affirmations Support your Goals and your Journey – Part Two

It’s time to discover what your feelings are telling you. Let’s say you have the supportive feeling of excitement when you think about the learning opportunity. You can enhance that support by developing an affirmation such as, “I am continually excited that I am learning _____________.” (By the way, using “I am” rather than “I’m” is more forceful. “I am” statements declare who you are.)

If you are fearful when thinking about your goal, get underneath that fear. What are you fearful about? Is it that you won’t achieve it? That it will take up too much time getting there? Or, take too long to get there? Or, that you don’t have the resources necessary to achieve your goal? Sit down and list what is underneath the fears. Once you know the cause of the fears, you can develop affirmations to counteract the fears.

Let’s say you are concerned about how long it will take to achieve your goal. Perhaps you want to complete a course of studies that requires two years. If you think that is too long, imagine what it would feel like if, in two years, you ‘would have’ finished your studies. Now imagine what it would feel like if you hadn’t finished your studies. After all, it is the same two years. At the end of one two year period you have accomplished your goal and in the other you haven’t. What feels best to you? Accomplishing your goals or not accomplishing them?

Assuming it feels great to have finished your studies, develop an affirmation addressing your fear of it taking so long. Examples are, “I am excited about finishing my studies on or before _______.”   “My confidence increases each day as I complete my studies on or before _______.”

When you repeat your affirmations, don’t just do it from your head. You want your affirmations integrated within you. Focus on the center of your chest, right near your heart, stand or sit tall imagining roots growing from your feet. Now confidently declare your affirmation. Feel your affirmation as truth. Feel your affirmation with your whole self, not just in your head.
